On a diesel Electronically Controlled Fuel System, the ECU works in the same way as on a petrol electronically controlled fuel system, i.e. the data is sent into the ECU, then the ECU processes the information it was given and after making a judgement on how much fuel/air etc… to inject/ draw in etc…, it sends a signal to the appropriate systems. The Diesel Electronic Fuel System needs the sensors to send a signal to the ECU for the system to work efficiently and economically, the following things are monitored by sensors for the fuel system on a diesel engine:
- Injector Needle Motion
- Coolant Temperature
- Air Temperature
- Control Spool Position
- Air Mass
- Engine Speed
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)
- Vehicle Speed
- Accelerator Position
