Subject: Re: Timing Belt by Nick on 2008/9/21 21:58:07 The timing belt is what keeps the whole engine running smoothly, it ensured that the valves to not hit the pistons... If the belt is not replaced as stated by the manufacturer there is a high chance of it snapping, causing the valves to hit the pistons and the engine will then stop! It is one of the most important parts of the engine. A lot of older engines, and most new Mercedes-Benz engines use timing chains, these are the same in principal, however they last a lot longer and start to rattle when they are near to breaking, they can easily double the distance of a timing belt, however they are more expensive to use. There is a simplex timing chain and a duplex timing chain, the simplex is a single chain, and the duplex is a double chain, which will obviously last longer. |
